A newsreel archive company has recently uploaded 85,000 historic films made between 1896 and 1976 onto Youtube (under than name British Pathe if you want to check them out.  There is the Wright Brothers’ first flight and Queen Victoria’s funeral in 1901 among other things).

One in particular relates to demography.  Planned Parenthood, an organisation which receives huge amounts of funding in the United States, was started by a lady with rather sinister views, Margaret Sanger.  Despite its terrible origins the organisation lives on and has had a huge impact on world demographics. When I was in Sydney last May, a headline in the free MX newspaper handed out in the underground caught my eye. “Contraception education failing the young”, it announced and went on to say that half of all pregnancies in Australia aren’t planned.
