Leftist Tactics Against Marriage: Have a Road Map but Call it a Slogan

August 15th, 2012

How much more vague can you get?

Notice this slogan from Freedom to Marry, an organization dedicated to redefining marriage: Love + Commitment = Marriage. It’s catchy. It’s easy to remember.  And it’s super vague.

People on my side of the debate often assert that SSM will eventually lead to marriage redefinition regarding other components of marriage. Leftists’ reasoning to remove the gender component to marriage will be used by other groups to redefine marriage further. Notice this slogan has no mention of the number of people required or the social reason to have marriage at all. No, under this definition, marriage is strictly between the X (undetermined) number of people involved with no social significance whatsoever as to why they should be granted the marital status. What is to stop Freedom to Marry from supporting polygamists or close relatives from marrying? They say they are against this, yet their very argument points in a different direction.

Look at it again as if it was a road map saying, “This is where we’re going.” What are the parameters? Only love and commitment. As long as marriage falls within these parameters, it’s OK with these people. Don’t be surprised when Freedom to Marry takes up the banner of other groups. It may be years from now. Their slogan is indefensible as a reason to deny helping those groups obtain the marital status.
