California bill would allow non-physicians to perform abortions

A pro-family group says the approval of an abortion expansion bill in California is a “travesty.”
The California Senate approved a bill, AB 154, that would expand abortion in the state by expanding the duties of non-physicians. AB 154 allows nurse practitioners, physicians’ assistants, and certified nurse-midwives to perform non-surgical abortions.
“This is a travesty for women in California. It’s a travesty for women everywhere,” Larry Jacobs of the World Congress of Families says of the bill.
The bill by Democrat Assemblywoman Toni Atkins passed the state Senate by a 25-11 vote with only Democrats in support.
The measure’s supporters say AB 154 was created to address the growing shortage of abortion providers. But pro-life groups say the bill will put women at risk because of an increase in complications when abortions are performed by non-physicians.
“Abortion is harmful,” says Jacobs. “It hurts women. It damages women. It increases breast cancer, and it’s associated with an increased risk of death in all causes.”
