Judge punished for refusing to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies
A Washington State judge is paying a political price for his traditional view on marriage in a state where same-sex “marriage” is legal.
Last year, Thurston County Superior Court Judge Gary Tabor stated that he did not want to perform same-gender weddings. That led to a complaint before the Washington Judicial Conduct Commission.
Joseph Backholm, who heads the Family Policy Institute of Washington, reports the judge was punished.
“This is just another example of how the Left on the marriage issue is completely intolerant of people who don’t think like them,” says Backholm, suggesting that the “marketplace in the world” is big enough for people to find someone who is comfortable performing a ceremony.
“But they have no intention of making room in the public square for people who don’t agree with them,” Backholm says of the Left.
The Olympian newspaper reported that the Commission admonished Judge Tabor with a warning, the “least severe punishment available,” and the judge agreed with it.
The newspaper went on to report the Commission considered its punishment of Tabor “guidance” to other judges in the state.
“No same-sex couples will be denied the right to be married in Thurston County,” read a statement from the eight-judge panel.
